Shreyas Iyer Diagnosed with Laceration Injury to Spleen, Remains in ICU in SydneyImage source: ianslive.in
Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been diagnosed with a laceration injury to his spleen following a collision-like fielding effort during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday. The BCCI confirmed on Monday that the 29-year-old batter remains admitted in the ICU at a Sydney hospital for close observation.
According to BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, Iyer is “under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.” He added that the Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to monitor his progress daily.
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress,”
said Saikia in an official statement.
The Incident
The freak accident occurred in the 33rd over of Australia’s innings when Alex Carey mistimed a pull shot off Harshit Rana. Stationed at backward point, Iyer sprinted back as the ball swirled overhead and launched himself full-length to complete a tumbling catch near deep third man.
The athletic effort earned applause, but moments later, Iyer was seen clutching his side in visible pain. He was immediately taken off the field and rushed to the hospital after preliminary scans raised concerns about internal bleeding risks.
Medical Updates & Family’s Travel Plans
As per sources cited by IANS, Iyer’s condition warranted immediate hospitalization to prevent infection or internal bleeding spreading to other vital organs.
“Based on what the specialists say after assessing him, he could spend more days in ICU or be under their close observation for maybe a week,” the report quoted a source as saying.
Meanwhile, Iyer’s parents, Rohini and Santosh Iyer, have reportedly applied for emergency visas and are expected to fly from Mumbai to Sydney soon to be with their son.
Impact on India’s Upcoming Matches
While the extent of recovery time remains unclear, medical experts suggest that spleen injuries generally require careful rest and gradual rehabilitation. With the Test series against England and upcoming white-ball commitments, Iyer’s participation now appears uncertain.
Team management has reportedly informed selectors about the situation, and a replacement could be named if Iyer’s recovery extends beyond the next two weeks.
A Crucial Player Under Rehabilitation
Shreyas Iyer, who made a comeback to the Indian side earlier this year after a back surgery, had shown promising form across formats. His absence could be a major blow to India’s middle order stability ahead of a packed international calendar.
Fans and teammates have flooded social media with messages wishing him a speedy recovery.
Iyer’s injury serves as a reminder of the physical intensity demanded in modern cricket, where players risk their bodies for every catch or stop. The BCCI’s transparent medical updates and the presence of a dedicated doctor underscore how seriously player safety is now prioritized in Indian cricket.
