CJP Leaders Detained After Landing in Delhi
Leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, were detained after arriving in Delhi from Mumbai on Saturday, October 10, ahead of the party’s planned protest at Jantar Mantar.
In a statement, the party alleged that the detentions were part of a pre-planned move to prevent its leaders from reaching the protest venue. CJP demanded their immediate and unconditional release.
The proposed demonstration was aimed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning voter-list manipulation during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and changes related to Form 6, which is used to apply for voter registration.
Dhruv Rathee Also Detained
Earlier on Saturday, YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and Ratna Singh, who heads the CJP legal team, were also reportedly detained by police at their residences.
The detentions took place amid heightened security in the national capital, as Delhi Police took steps to prevent protesters from reaching the designated protest site.
The party criticised the police action, maintaining that its leaders wanted to raise concerns about electoral processes and voter registration.
Protest Focuses on Electoral Roll Revision
The dispute centres on the SIR process, through which electoral rolls are reviewed, and concerns raised by opponents over the possible exclusion of eligible voters. Form 6 is used by eligible citizens to seek inclusion in electoral rolls.
The allegations made by CJP concern the conduct of the electoral revision process. They should be distinguished from established findings, and the claims would require verification through official records and responses from the authorities.
Our Final Thoughts
The detentions have added to the debate over political protests, police restrictions and concerns surrounding electoral-roll revisions. Further clarity on the legal grounds for the detentions and the authorities’ response will be important in understanding the developments.
