US Embassy, Consulates in Pakistan Suspend Operations After Deadly Protests
Islamabad/New Delhi, March 2 (TheTrendingPeople): The United States Embassy in Islamabad and its consulates in Lahore and Karachi have temporarily suspended operations amid escalating nationwide protests following the reported assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli strike.
According to official statements, all visa appointments at the Islamabad embassy and the consulates in Karachi and Lahore have been cancelled through Friday, March 6, citing the deteriorating security situation.
In a message posted on X, the US Embassy confirmed that routine consular services have been halted due to ongoing unrest. The United States Consulate General Karachi and the Lahore mission were reportedly surrounded by demonstrators earlier this week.
A security alert issued on March 1 warned of protests outside diplomatic premises in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Peshawar. The United States Consulate General Peshawar also temporarily halted operations due to security concerns.
US personnel were directed to restrict movements, and American citizens were advised to avoid large gatherings, monitor local news and ensure their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program registrations remain updated.
The protests erupted following reports of Khamenei’s killing, sparking widespread unrest across Pakistan. Authorities confirmed that at least 23 people have died nationwide.
In Karachi, 10 fatalities were reported outside the US Consulate, where witnesses described chaotic scenes and alleged gunfire. Eleven deaths were recorded in Skardu, while two fatalities were reported in Islamabad.
In Lahore, hundreds gathered near the consulate, leading to clashes with security forces who deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd. In Islamabad, demonstrators attempted to march toward the embassy despite heavy security deployment and roadblocks.
Punjab and Islamabad authorities invoked Section 144, prohibiting public gatherings and rallies. Major roads near the Karachi consulate remained closed for a second consecutive day.
The suspension of US diplomatic operations disrupts visa processing and American Citizen Services, affecting students, business travellers and families awaiting documentation.
Diplomatically, the unrest highlights the volatile spillover of broader Middle East tensions into South Asia. Security analysts note that diplomatic missions often become focal points during geopolitical crises, increasing risks for foreign personnel and local citizens.
Economic and travel disruptions are also likely if instability persists, particularly in major urban centres.
The US Embassy has stated that operations will resume once the security environment stabilises. Pakistani authorities continue efforts to restore order while monitoring further demonstrations.
With regional tensions high, observers warn that diplomatic security measures may remain tightened in the coming days.
Our Final Thoughts
The suspension of US consular services in Pakistan underscores the far-reaching consequences of escalating geopolitical conflict. Diplomatic missions are often the first to respond when unrest intensifies, prioritising safety over routine operations.
As authorities work to stabilise the situation, the focus remains on preventing further casualties and restoring calm. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether tensions subside or deepen.
