Jaishankar Meets Ukraine FM at G7, Focus on West Asia and Supply Chains
Paris, March 27: India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held talks with Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in France, focusing on the escalating West Asia conflict, global supply chain stability, and bilateral cooperation.
The meeting comes amid heightened tensions in West Asia following the February 28 escalation involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. The conflict, which has disrupted regional stability and energy routes, was a central point of discussion between the two leaders.
Sybiha confirmed the exchange on social media, stating that both sides emphasised the importance of regional stabilisation and the uninterrupted functioning of global supply chains. The ministers also agreed to continue diplomatic engagement and strengthen India-Ukraine ties.
India’s Position at G7
Jaishankar is in France for a two-day visit to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting at Abbaye des-Vaux-de-Cernay. During the session on global governance reforms, he highlighted the urgent need to reform the United Nations Security Council, calling for more inclusive representation and efficient peacekeeping mechanisms.
He also raised concerns of the Global South, particularly around energy security, fertiliser shortages, and food supply disruptions — issues exacerbated by ongoing conflicts.
In another key session, Jaishankar underlined the importance of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), stating that geopolitical uncertainties reinforce the need for resilient and diversified trade routes.
He noted that India’s free trade agreements with European partners have strengthened the potential of IMEC, which aims to connect India with Europe through the Middle East via rail and maritime networks.
The discussions reflect growing international concern over how regional conflicts are affecting global trade, energy flows, and humanitarian supply chains. With key routes under pressure, countries are increasingly pushing for alternative corridors and stronger multilateral cooperation.
Our Final Thoughts
Jaishankar’s engagement at the G7 highlights India’s expanding diplomatic role in addressing global crises. As conflicts reshape supply chains and economic stability, India’s push for reform and resilient connectivity projects like IMEC could play a critical role in future global frameworks.
