Justin Timberlake Files Petition to Block Release of DWI Arrest Bodycam Footage
Singer-actor Justin Timberlake has taken legal action to prevent the public release of police body camera footage from his June 2024 driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrest.
According to court filings in Suffolk County Supreme Court, Timberlake submitted a petition on March 2 seeking an emergency stay to block dissemination of the footage under New York’s Freedom of Information Law (FOIL).
Timberlake was arrested in June 2024 after leaving the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, New York. He was initially charged with one count of driving while intoxicated, along with citations for running a stop sign and failure to keep in lane.
His legal team later reached a plea deal in September 2024, under which he pleaded guilty to a lesser offence. His attorneys have consistently maintained that he was not intoxicated at the time of arrest.
The petition follows a FOIL request submitted to the Sag Harbor Village Police Department, as well as the Village of Sag Harbor and its police chief.
Timberlake’s attorneys, Edward Burke Jr. and Michael J. Del Piano, argue that releasing the footage would constitute an invasion of privacy and cause “severe and irreparable harm” to his personal and professional reputation.
The petition claims the footage may reveal private details inside Timberlake’s vehicle, as well as sensitive medical or familial information unrelated to public oversight of governmental operations.
His legal team has requested that the court prohibit dissemination of the bodycam footage “in whole or in part” unless ordered by the court. They also asked for the opportunity to review the footage with proposed redactions before any release.
The court will now consider whether the footage qualifies for disclosure under FOIL or whether privacy exemptions apply. The case highlights the broader legal tension between public transparency and individual privacy, especially in high-profile matters involving celebrities.
