Iran Warns US of “Bitter Regret” After Frigate IRIS Dena Sunk Near Sri Lanka
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Thursday warned that the United States would “bitterly regret” its actions after an American submarine reportedly sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka.
The statement marks the first official acknowledgment by the Iranian government of the vessel’s sinking.
Posting on X, Araghchi described the incident as an “atrocity at sea” that occurred roughly 2,000 miles from Iran’s coastline.
He said the frigate was traveling in international waters and described it as a guest of Indian Navy, carrying nearly 130 sailors when it was struck without warning.
The alleged incident further intensifies tensions between Iran and the United States amid the escalating conflict across West Asia.
Our Final Thoughts
If confirmed, the sinking of an Iranian naval vessel in international waters could mark a significant escalation in the ongoing geopolitical confrontation, potentially widening the crisis beyond the Middle East.
