Indonesia Signs Agreement With India to Procure BrahMos Missile System

JAKARTA, March 9 — Indonesia has signed an agreement with India to procure the BrahMos Missile System, marking a significant step in strengthening its defence capabilities, according to Reuters reports.
The development was confirmed on Monday by Indonesia’s defence ministry spokesperson Rico Ricardo Sirait, who said the agreement forms part of the country’s broader effort to modernise its military equipment.
Strengthening Maritime Defence
Sirait said the missile purchase is aimed primarily at improving Indonesia’s maritime security and defence preparedness.
He noted that the procurement is linked to Indonesia’s ongoing military modernisation programme, which focuses on enhancing naval and coastal defence capabilities across the archipelago nation.
“This agreement is part of the modernisation of military hardware and defence capabilities, especially in the maritime sector,” Sirait told Reuters.
Deal Value Not Confirmed
While Indonesia confirmed the agreement, officials declined to disclose the total value of the deal.
However, earlier discussions between Jakarta and BrahMos Aerospace were estimated to be worth between $200 million and $350 million, according to earlier reports.
BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between the governments of India and Russia and produces one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missile systems.
Previous International Sales
Indonesia would become the second foreign buyer of the BrahMos missile system.
The first export deal was signed with the Philippines in 2022, marking a milestone for India’s defence export ambitions and strengthening security ties in the Indo-Pacific region.
The BrahMos missile is capable of being launched from land, sea, and air platforms and is widely regarded as a key asset for modern naval warfare.
Awaiting Official Confirmation
Officials from BrahMos Aerospace and India’s defence ministry have not yet issued formal statements regarding the agreement, Reuters reported.
The deal reflects India’s growing role as a defence exporter and its expanding strategic partnerships with Southeast Asian nations.
Our Final Thoughts
Indonesia’s decision to procure the BrahMos missile system highlights the growing strategic cooperation between India and Southeast Asian countries amid evolving regional security dynamics. As maritime security becomes increasingly critical in the Indo-Pacific, defence partnerships like this are expected to play a major role in shaping the region’s military balance.
