Goa Nightclub Fire Triggers Alarm in Uttarakhand as CM Dhami Seeks Details; States Coordinate Relief Efforts

New Delhi/Dehradun, Dec 7: The devastating fire that swept through a popular nightclub in Goa’s Arpora late Saturday night has not only shaken the coastal state but has also raised concern in Uttarakhand after inputs suggested that some residents of the hill state may be among the affected. With more than 20 lives lost in the tragic incident—four tourists and fourteen staff members—state governments across India have begun coordinating to extend support to families of the victims.
Taking urgent cognisance of reports indicating possible involvement of Uttarakhand residents, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami contacted Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday. CM Dhami sought detailed information regarding the incident, the condition of the victims and confirmation on whether any individuals from Uttarakhand were among those killed or injured.
Officials said that during the conversation, CM Dhami requested the Goa administration to immediately inform Uttarakhand authorities if any affected person was identified as a resident of the hill state. He assured that the Uttarakhand government stood ready to extend full support to the families concerned.
Dhami emphasised that if any Uttarakhand residents were found among the casualties or injured, the state government would provide complete assistance, including help with identification, medical arrangements, compensation processing, transportation of remains and all required formalities. He added that emotional and legal support would also be extended to the families to ensure they face no difficulty during a time of immense grief.
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is learned to have assured Dhami that the Goa administration was providing all necessary medical and administrative support to the survivors. Sawant said that the state machinery had been fully mobilised since the accident occurred and that all departments were working together to manage rescue operations, hospital care, and coordination with the families of those affected.
Following the call, CM Dhami directed Uttarakhand officials and departments concerned to remain vigilant and closely monitor all developments emerging from Goa. He instructed them to maintain active coordination with the Goa government to ensure timely information flow. Dhami added that the state was fully prepared to provide medical, financial and logistical assistance to any affected Uttarakhand resident.
The Uttarakhand government issued a statement saying it stands firmly with any family from the state affected by the tragedy. Officials highlighted that they were in continuous touch with Goa’s authorities and were receiving updates as soon as new information emerged. The state administration reiterated that it would act with full sensitivity and responsibility to ensure no family was left unsupported.
Meanwhile, at the national level, President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. She described the fire incident as heartbreaking and conveyed her condolences to the families of the deceased. In a message shared on X, the President said she was “deeply pained by the tragic fire incident in North Goa district resulting in the loss of precious lives” and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reacted strongly to the tragedy, calling the incident “deeply saddening.” PM Modi announced an ex gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the next of kin of each person who lost their life and Rs 50,000 for those injured. He also spoke directly to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to assess the situation and assured that the central government was ready to extend all necessary support.
The fire, which broke out during a peak weekend night at the Arpora-based nightclub, spread rapidly through the premises. Rescue teams reported that the intensity of the flames made evacuation extremely difficult, resulting in multiple casualties. Many of the victims were staff members working night shifts, while several tourists were also caught inside when the fire began.
On Sunday, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident. Sawant visited the site early in the morning to assess the damage and review rescue operations. He told media that the general manager of the nightclub had been arrested and that an arrest warrant had been issued for the club’s owner.
