Srinagar, October 27, 2025: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday announced that the picturesque Gurez Valley in Bandipora district is rapidly emerging as one of India’s most promising offbeat tourist destinations.
Addressing the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister — who also holds the Tourism portfolio — said that the Tourism Department has initiated several developmental projects under the Capex Budget to upgrade Gurez’s tourism infrastructure.
“The works are being executed in coordination with the District Administration, Bandipora, involving the identification and transfer of land for tourism development,” Omar Abdullah said.
Gurez Wins ‘Best Off-Beat Destination in India’ Award
Highlighting Gurez’s growing recognition, Omar Abdullah informed the House that the valley was conferred with the ‘Best Off-Beat Destination in India (Gold)’ award in 2022. The recognition, he said, reflected the valley’s pristine beauty, unique landscape, and commitment to sustainable tourism.
“The award underscores Gurez Valley’s immense potential and its rising popularity among travellers seeking offbeat and eco-friendly destinations,” the Chief Minister noted.
Tourism Development and Future Plans
Responding to a query from MLA Gurez, Nazir Ahmad Khan, about exclusive schemes for emerging destinations, the Chief Minister said that Gurez has already been identified as a priority location by the Tourism Department.
“As and when a dedicated scheme for offbeat destinations is launched by the Government of India, Gurez will be strongly recommended for inclusion,” Omar Abdullah assured.
He added that the administration is focusing on strengthening connectivity, improving local amenities, and promoting eco-tourism to attract visitors year-round.
No Tourist Helicopter Service Yet, Says Omar Abdullah
During the discussion, Omar Abdullah clarified that there is currently no helicopter service available for tourists in Gurez. “The existing helicopter service operates mainly for locals and patients, as the region remains cut off during winter months,” he said.
However, the Chief Minister indicated that the government is open to exploring private participation in tourism-related aviation services.
“If any private player intends to start helicopter services for tourists in Gurez, we will extend full support. Although no such proposal is presently under consideration, the government can examine and explore it if one comes forward,” he said.
Light and Sound Show Proposal Under Review
Omar Abdullah also revealed that a proposal to host a Light and Sound Show in Gurez Valley is being explored. The show, suggested to be held at the iconic Habba Khatoon Mountain, aims to enhance the tourist experience while celebrating the region’s cultural heritage.
“We will assess its technical and logistical feasibility. If found viable, we can move forward with the project,” the Chief Minister said.
