LONDON, March 6 — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has offered additional defensive air cover to Bahrain amid rising tensions in the Middle East, saying British fighter jets deployed to the Gulf region could help protect the kingdom from potential Iranian missile or drone attacks, according to Reuters reports.
Starmer conveyed the assurance during a phone conversation with Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain, late Thursday. The discussion comes as the United Kingdom increases its military presence in the region following escalating hostilities involving Iran.
According to a readout from the British Prime Minister’s office, four UK fighter jets recently deployed to Qatar could be used to strengthen Bahrain’s defensive capabilities if required.
“The Prime Minister also offered further defensive air cover from these jets for Bahrain to bolster their security,” the statement said.
King Hamad welcomed the confirmation of support, and both sides agreed that operational teams would work together in the coming days to coordinate defence planning and security measures.
The move reflects growing international concern over the potential expansion of the conflict across the Gulf region, where several countries have heightened security measures amid fears of missile and drone strikes.
Our Final Thoughts
The UK’s offer of defensive support underscores the growing geopolitical stakes in the Gulf. As tensions surrounding Iran intensify, international military cooperation and regional security coordination are likely to play a critical role in preventing further escalation.
