Chepauk pitch could suit Sanju Samson’s batting style in IPL 2026, says Piyush Chawla
New Delhi, March 13: Former India spinner Piyush Chawla believes that Sanju Samson’s batting style could be well suited to the conditions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai Super Kings’ home ground, as the wicketkeeper-batter prepares for his first season with the five-time champions in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Samson enters the new IPL season with strong momentum after an impressive campaign in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he delivered a series of impactful performances during the knockout stages. According to Chawla, Samson’s form ahead of the IPL will be a major boost for Chennai Super Kings.
Samson enters IPL 2026 after strong T20 World Cup form
Samson produced three consecutive half-centuries in crucial matches during the recently concluded T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter scored significant fifties against West Indies in the Super 8 stage, England in the semi-final, and New Zealand in the final, helping India during key moments of the tournament.
Speaking on JioHotstar, Chawla said Samson’s performances have silenced critics and demonstrated his ability to deliver on the biggest stage.
“Sanju Samson is a match-winner in himself. He proved his doubters wrong with three back-to-back impactful knocks against West Indies, England and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup,” Chawla said.
He added that Samson arriving at the IPL in top form is encouraging news for the Chennai franchise.
“CSK will be very happy with his form because Samson has peaked right before the start of the IPL. That is great news for their fans,” he said.
Chepauk conditions expected to complement Samson’s game
The MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, popularly known as Chepauk, has traditionally been known for its slower pitches that assist spin bowlers. However, Chawla believes Samson’s ability to play spin and rotate strike effectively could make him particularly effective on such surfaces.
“Coming to Chennai, the way the wicket plays there will definitely suit his game,” Chawla noted.
Samson’s aggressive stroke play combined with his ability to handle slower bowling attacks could allow him to adapt well to the conditions that have historically favoured CSK.
Blockbuster trade brings Samson to CSK
Samson joined Chennai Super Kings through a major trade deal ahead of the IPL 2026 auction. The franchise acquired him from Rajasthan Royals in exchange for all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran, making it one of the most talked-about transfers before the new season.
Over the course of his IPL career, Samson has established himself as a consistent performer.
Sanju Samson IPL career statistics:
- Matches: 177
- Runs scored: 4,707
- Batting average: 30.95
His experience and leadership background are expected to add depth to the CSK batting lineup.
Samson could solve CSK’s opening concerns
Chawla also suggested that Samson’s arrival could help address CSK’s struggles in the powerplay last season.
According to him, the team often failed to get fast starts at the top of the order until young opener Ayush Mhatre, India’s Under-19 captain, joined the side and provided more aggressive starts.
“Opening the innings, his aggressive style will benefit CSK a lot. Last season, they struggled to get quick starts,” Chawla said.
He believes a partnership between Samson and Mhatre could strengthen the team’s top order.
“Only after Ayush Mhatre arrived did CSK start scoring runs in the powerplay. Now, with Samson in, their opening problems will finally be solved. They need that experienced opener alongside Ayush Mhatre,” he added.
CSK aiming to strengthen batting depth
Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history with five titles, are looking to rebuild and strengthen their batting unit ahead of the 2026 season.
With the addition of Samson, the team hopes to combine youthful energy with experienced match-winners, a formula that has often defined the franchise’s success.
Chawla believes the trade could prove to be a major turning point for CSK this season.
“Samson’s trade move to CSK is going to be a blockbuster one,” he said.
Our Final Thoughts
Sanju Samson’s move to Chennai Super Kings has generated significant interest ahead of IPL 2026, especially given his recent international form. If he adapts quickly to Chepauk conditions and builds a strong opening partnership with Ayush Mhatre, the move could significantly strengthen CSK’s batting lineup and reshape their powerplay strategy this season.
