LPG Supply Rumours Denied Amid Iran War Concerns, Govt Assures Stable Distribution
New Delhi: The government on Monday dismissed speculation that state-run oil companies are reducing LPG refill quantities from 14.2 kg to 10 kg amid supply concerns linked to the ongoing Iran conflict. Officials clarified that there is no such proposal under consideration and urged citizens not to panic.
Government Clarifies LPG Supply Position
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated that reports suggesting a reduction in LPG cylinder quantity are “highly speculative.” She emphasised that the government’s priority remains stabilising supply and preventing illegal diversion.
Despite global disruptions, Sharma said LPG availability at distributorships remains steady, and panic booking has eased. Deliveries across regions are continuing normally, indicating controlled demand and improved logistics.
PNG Expansion and Commercial LPG Allocation
Providing an update, the government confirmed that nearly 3.5 lakh domestic and commercial Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections have been activated in the past three weeks. This move is expected to reduce dependence on LPG in urban clusters.
Additionally, 50% of commercial LPG has been allocated to states and Union Territories. These supplies are being directed towards essential services such as restaurants, community kitchens, industrial canteens, and food processing units. So far, around 20 states have utilised nearly 15,800 tonnes of commercial LPG.
Tanker Movement Offers Relief
In a positive development, two Indian-flagged LPG tankers carrying approximately 92,000 tonnes of gas have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are expected to reach India within two days. Earlier shipments had also arrived successfully, easing immediate supply concerns.
