Trichy MP Durai Vaiko Flags Delay in Key NHAI Projects, Meets Nitin Gadkari
Trichy: Trichy MP Durai Vaiko met Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Friday, seeking an update on the status of three major National Highways Authority of India projects in Tamil Nadu. The MP highlighted delays in the preparation of detailed project reports for critical infrastructure works, calling them vital for economic growth and traffic decongestion.
Durai Vaiko said progress on the Chennai–Trichy–Thoothukudi greenfield highway and the Trichy semi-ring road had remained stagnant for a prolonged period. He stressed the importance of expediting the highway linking Thoothukudi port with major industrial regions to support trade and logistics.
Raising safety concerns, the MP drew attention to the Trichy–Karur National Highway, which has witnessed frequent fatal accidents due to its narrow and curved alignment. He noted that only the Karur–Coimbatore stretch of the larger project has seen progress, while the Trichy–Karur segment remains unchanged. Given geographical constraints, he urged faster execution of the proposed Trichy–Karur greenfield highway.
Durai Vaiko also flagged delays in completing the DPR for the Panjapur–Jeeyapuram stretch of the Trichy semi-ring road. According to him, the minister assured that work on the semi-ring road would begin in 2026.
Our Final Thoughts
Delays in major road infrastructure projects continue to impact safety, connectivity and economic momentum in central Tamil Nadu. While assurances from the Centre offer some optimism, timely completion of DPRs and execution will be crucial. With ports, industrial corridors and accident-prone highways involved, faster implementation could significantly improve regional development and commuter safety.
