Spotify Global Outage Disrupts Streaming and Logins for Thousands of Users Worldwide
New Delhi: Music streaming giant Spotify faced a widespread global outage on Monday (December 15), leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access the platform across multiple regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom and India. The disruption affected core services such as music playback, homepage loading and user logins, triggering a wave of complaints on social media.
According to outage-tracking website Downdetector, reports peaked at nearly 36,000 users in the US, over 10,300 in the UK, and around 1,300 in India. At the height of the outage, a majority of users flagged issues with the mobile app, while others reported login failures and website access problems.
Spotify acknowledged the issue through its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating, “We’re aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!” As reports gradually declined, the company later confirmed that the disruption had been resolved. “All clear! Thanks for your patience. If you're still having issues, you can find out more on this issue on our Community support thread,” Spotify posted.
Despite the announcement, some users continued to report intermittent login and playback problems. On its community support page, Spotify said it was still receiving reports of users facing issues across multiple platforms, though it did not disclose the exact cause of the outage.
Downdetector data showed that nearly 80 per cent of complaints were related to app performance, 11 per cent to login issues, and 9 per cent to website access. The outage marks Spotify’s third major disruption this year, following similar incidents in April and June.
While services appear to be largely restored, the recurring outages have raised questions about platform stability as Spotify continues to expand its global user base.
Our Thoughts
Repeated outages underline the challenges faced by global digital platforms operating at massive scale. As Spotify grows, service reliability will be key to retaining user trust in an increasingly competitive streaming market.
