Eminent Hindi Writer and Jnanpith Awardee Vinod Kumar Shukla Passes Away at 89
Renowned Hindi writer and poet Vinod Kumar Shukla, one of India’s most distinctive literary voices, passed away on Tuesday evening due to age-related ailments. He was 89. His family confirmed the news to PTI, marking the end of an era in Hindi literature.
Vinod Kumar Shukla had been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, on December 2 after experiencing breathing difficulties. He had also been hospitalised briefly in October this year but was discharged after his condition improved. His passing has drawn tributes from across the literary world.
Born and raised in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, Shukla began his literary journey in the same town. In 2024, he was awarded the 59th Jnanpith Award, becoming the first writer from Chhattisgarh to receive India’s highest literary honour. He is survived by his wife, son Shashwat, and a daughter.
