The Union Cabinet has approved a budget of ₹11,718 crore for Census 2027, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced. The exercise will take place in two phases, beginning with House Listing from April to September 2026, followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027.
Vaishnaw stated that Census 2027 will be India’s first-ever digital census, introducing a modern, technology-driven system expected to improve accuracy, efficiency and processing speed. The shift to digital data collection is projected to support long-term planning in areas such as welfare, infrastructure, healthcare and employment.
