BJP Delegation Seeks CBI Probe Into Illegal Drug Manufacturing Units in Puducherry
A BJP delegation in Puducherry met Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan on Monday, requesting a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged illegal operations of drug manufacturing units recently uncovered in the Union Territory. The memorandum submitted by BJP Puducherry president V.P. Ramalingam stated that the CB-CID police had unearthed two unauthorised pharmaceutical units located in Mettupalayam and Sedarapet.
According to the BJP, the units reportedly operated for nearly four years, producing fake and substandard medicines and conducting multi-crore inter-State business. The memorandum highlighted that the scale of the operation, the suspected financial network and the possibility of high-level collusion required an investigation beyond the scope of local authorities. The party urged a CBI-led inquiry focused on tracing the illegal supply chain, identifying the origin of precursor chemicals and exposing the distribution network allegedly used by the drug manufacturing mafia.
The delegation also emphasised the need to strengthen legal access to quality medicines. In its memorandum, the BJP urged the Lt. Governor to expand the number of Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendras in Puducherry. The party said increasing these outlets would ensure affordable and reliable medicines for residents, while complementing efforts to eliminate illegal drug production.
The Lt. Governor assured the delegation that the concerns would be examined and appropriate action would follow.
Our Thoughts
The BJP’s demand for a CBI probe reflects the seriousness of the allegations linked to illegal drug manufacturing in Puducherry. The operation of unauthorised pharmaceutical units for several years suggests systemic lapses that may involve broader networks across multiple States. A central agency investigation could help uncover the origins of the counterfeit medicines, the chemicals involved and the routes through which the products were circulated. Such inquiries are essential to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the regulatory framework.
At the same time, the call for expanding Pradhan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushadhi Kendras highlights a dual approach: tackling illegal operations while strengthening access to affordable, quality medication. Improving the presence of these outlets can help reduce dependence on unregulated markets and ensure citizens receive safe alternatives. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether a central probe will be officially initiated.
