Shilpa Rao Returns to Jamshedpur, Honours Her Parents at Jharkhand Foundation Day
Grammy-nominated and National Award–winning singer Shilpa Rao made an emotional homecoming as she performed at Jharkhand’s 25th Foundation Day celebrations in Jamshedpur — the city where her musical roots were first nurtured. For the acclaimed singer, this was more than a performance; it was a return to the place that shaped her earliest dreams.
Shilpa, celebrated for her soulful voice and global musical achievements, received a warm welcome from thousands of fans. But the evening’s most touching moment came when she invited her parents on stage, honouring them for the role they played in building her foundation as an artiste.
Her father, a trained classical musician with an MA in Music, was the first to recognise her gift. He guided her daily riyaaz, encouraged formal training, and ensured discipline remained at the core of her artistic journey. Many of Shilpa’s early melodies were born in their Jamshedpur home, where afternoons were dedicated to practice and learning.
Expressing her gratitude, Shilpa said:
“Everything I am today is because of Jamshedpur. It all began here, with my parents standing rock solid. Bringing them on stage was my way of honouring the two people who shaped my voice, my discipline, and my dreams.”
The singer appeared visibly emotional as the crowd cheered, while her parents looked on with pride, overwhelmed by the love their daughter received on her home turf. The moment resonated deeply with the audience, reminding everyone of the power of roots, family, and artistic lineage.
Shilpa Rao’s musical journey has soared globally. She recently won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for “Chaleya” from Jawan (2023). She also earned a Grammy nomination at the 63rd Grammy Awards for her work with Anoushka Shankar on the album Love Letters — a rare international honour for an Indian vocalist.
Her return to Jamshedpur, therefore, was not just a performance but a tribute to the city that shaped her. As the crowd celebrated Jharkhand’s Foundation Day, Shilpa celebrated the people and the place that built her artistic identity.
