Sophie Devine Announces ODI Retirement After New Zealand’s Exit from Women’s World Cup
Mumbai, India — October 24, 2025: New Zealand captain Sophie Devine fought back tears as she confirmed her decision to retire from One-Day Internationals (ODIs) following the team’s exit from the ICC Women’s World Cup, after a defeat against India at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday.
Devine, one of New Zealand’s most celebrated cricketers, will play her final ODI on Sunday against England in Visakhapatnam, marking the end of a remarkable international career spanning over a decade.
Emotional Farewell for Devine
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Devine struggled to hold back her emotions as she reflected on her journey and the team’s future.
“I don't really want to think too much about it because I probably get quite emotional around it,” Devine said. “But the way those girls went out there today… I'm incredibly proud of where this team's going. When you think about the likes of Izzy Gaze, Brooke Halliday, Melie Kerr, Eden Carson, the way that they're starting to really grow into themselves, it certainly makes it easier when I do step away after the next game, not before.”
Describing her feelings as that of a “proud mother,” Devine said she felt deeply connected to the team and its growth over the years. “I’ve been involved in this side for so long that you're so invested. I'm going to go through a few different emotions over the next couple of days, but we’ll take time to reflect on that,” she added.
New Zealand Fall Short Against India
The must-win clash against India saw New Zealand struggle in both batting and bowling departments. Opting to bowl first, they managed to control India’s openers early on but eventually succumbed to a powerful partnership that pushed India’s total beyond reach.
With a DLS-adjusted target of 325 in 44 overs, New Zealand faced an uphill battle from the start. Despite gritty half-centuries from Brooke Halliday and Izzy Gaze, they couldn’t keep up with the rising required rate.
“It’s hard. After any game, you can dissect every single ball,” Devine said. “I thought we were outstanding with the ball in the powerplay. It's always hard when you get a partnership of 200 plus — you're going to be under pressure. The Indian line-up was able to come out and swing pretty freely and they probably got a few too many.”
She added that while the defeat was disappointing, it was also an important learning experience for the younger players. “We spoke about staying close to the run rate as possible. It’s frustrating and gutting to lose any game of cricket, but especially when we still had a chance of making the semi-finals.”
End of an Era
Sophie Devine’s retirement will mark the end of an illustrious ODI career. Known for her powerful batting, sharp bowling, and inspiring leadership, Devine has been the cornerstone of New Zealand’s women’s cricket for years. Her exit leaves a void but also opens the door for a new generation of players to carry forward her legacy.
