UK Lawmaker Raises Alarm Over Persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh Ahead of DiwaliImage via IANS
United Kingdom Conservative Party MP Bob Blackman has voiced strong concerns regarding the ongoing persecution of minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus, highlighting that upcoming celebrations such as Diwali and the Hindu New Year will not bring joy to those affected.
Speaking at the House of Commons, Blackman said, “Next week, Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists will be celebrating Diwali, followed by the Hindu New Year. That will be a happy occasion, and everyone will be celebrating, but unfortunately, that will not be the case in Bangladesh.”
He referenced a recent report presented at the all-party parliamentary group for British Hindus, compiled by Insight UK, which detailed systematic oppression. “They are being persecuted, oppressed, and killed, their temples destroyed, and properties burned, sometimes with household members inside,” Blackman warned. He urged the UK Government to issue a statement outlining concrete steps to protect minorities in Bangladesh.
Responding, Leader of the House of Commons Alan Campbell condemned acts of hate and violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. “We are actively engaged in addressing the humanitarian situation in Bangladesh and supporting the interim government to ensure a peaceful democratic transition. We remain committed to the protection of freedom of religion,” Campbell affirmed.
Earlier this month, Blackman and other British lawmakers highlighted the deteriorating human rights situation in Bangladesh, calling on the UK government, United Nations, and international community to adopt a stronger stance. They urged a clear and time-bound pathway for peaceful elections and establishment of a stable civilian government to restore trust and accountability.
Bangladesh has witnessed escalating attacks on minority communities, including Hindus, under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. International human rights organisations have expressed growing concern over the violence, temple destruction, and forced displacement reported in the region.
The remarks by Blackman ahead of Diwali have reignited discussions on global religious freedom and the need for urgent international intervention to safeguard minorities in Bangladesh.
