Delhi Declares October 27 Holiday for Chhath Puja; CM Rekha Gupta Reviews Preparations Across 1,300 Ghats
New Delhi, October 25: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday announced that October 27 (Monday) will be a government holiday in Delhi to mark the sacred festival of Chhath Puja. The date coincides with the festival’s third and most revered day when devotees gather along riversides and ponds to offer prayers to the setting sun.
The decision, the CM said, recognises not only the spiritual and cultural importance of Chhath but also its deeper message of environmental balance and gratitude toward nature. “Chhath is a celebration of purity, devotion, and harmony with nature. It unites families, communities, and faiths,” she said in a statement released by the Chief Minister’s Office.
Extensive Arrangements Across Delhi Ghats
The Delhi government has launched an extensive citywide preparation drive, with over 1,300 Chhath ghats being readied for devotees. Of these, 17 model ghats along the Yamuna River are being upgraded with enhanced amenities, including waterproof tents, improved lighting, sanitation facilities, drinking water stations, and security arrangements.
Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control, Delhi Jal Board, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are coordinating efforts to ensure devotees can perform rituals safely and comfortably. Temporary medical camps and disaster response teams will also be deployed at key ghats to handle emergencies.
CM Rekha Gupta Inspects Pochanpur Ghat
Earlier in the day, CM Rekha Gupta, accompanied by MLA Sandeep Sahrawat and members of the Chhath Puja Committee, inspected preparations at Pochanpur Chhath Ghat in Dwarka Sector 23B. She reviewed ongoing decoration and maintenance work, ensuring that safety, cleanliness, and accessibility standards are met before the festival.
During her visit, the Chief Minister highlighted the government’s collaboration with local communities, noting that the success of Chhath Puja depends equally on citizen participation. “The festival is a symbol of unity and devotion. Together, we are transforming it into a citywide celebration that reflects Delhi’s cultural inclusivity,” Gupta remarked.
The Delhi Police, DTC, and Traffic Department have also announced special measures to manage traffic flow and ensure public safety near major ghats, including Kalindi Kunj, Wazirabad, and Sonia Vihar.
