New Delhi, Sept 8 (TTP): India’s unemployment rate has dropped to just 2 per cent, the lowest among G20 nations, according to Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, who cited the World Economic Forum’s ‘Future of Jobs Report 2025’ at an event in the capital on Monday. The announcement came during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Labour & Employment, Mentor Together, and Quikr, aimed at boosting job opportunities and youth employability through the National Career Service (NCS) Portal.
Employment Growth in Tandem with Economic Expansion
Highlighting India’s rapid economic progress, Mandaviya stressed that job creation has been visible across multiple sectors. “The National Career Service (NCS) platform, with nearly 52 lakh registered employers, 5.79 crore job seekers and over 7.22 crore vacancies mobilised, is now evolving to offer not just job listings, but as a one-stop solution for all employment-related services,” he said.
Currently, over 44 lakh active vacancies are available on the NCS portal. Mandaviya added that partnerships with leading organisations like Amazon and Swiggy have already mobilised nearly five lakh vacancies within the past year.
An official present at the event noted that the government’s collaborative approach has shifted the narrative around employability. “By bringing private sector players directly into the system, the Ministry is ensuring that opportunities reach young people faster and in a more structured way,” he said.
MoUs to Strengthen Youth Employability
The latest agreements with Mentor Together and Quikr underline the Ministry’s strategy to enhance both employability skills and access to opportunities.
- Mentor Together: The collaboration is expected to reach two lakh youth in the first year, including one lakh from the NCS database and one lakh new entrants under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY). The initiative will provide personalised career guidance from over 24,000 trained professionals, with a special focus on first-time job seekers and those from underserved backgrounds.
- Quikr: The renewed partnership will integrate more than 1,200 daily job listings from Quikr Jobs into the NCS portal, spanning over 1,200 cities across India. This will provide real-time access to job opportunities for millions of seekers, particularly those in rural and semi-urban regions.
Mandaviya said the agreements will make “structured mentoring and suitable employment opportunities available to job seekers at scale.”
Government’s Focus on Youth Employment
The minister recalled that at the very start of its third term, the Narendra Modi-led government announced five flagship schemes with a combined budget of ₹2 lakh crore, specifically targeting employment generation and skill development.
A key component of this package is the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PM-VBRY), with an allocation of ₹99,446 crore. The scheme aims to incentivise the creation of over 3.5 crore jobs in two years, of which 1.92 crore will benefit first-time entrants to the workforce.
According to officials, the scheme is already operational from August 2025, and the first phase will focus on encouraging industries to hire fresh graduates and first-time job seekers. “This is a transformational step. For many young Indians, entering the job market with government-backed support ensures not just employment, but sustainable career growth,” said a senior Ministry official at the event.
