The Trending People | June 29, 2025| Bollywood's 2018 blockbuster Sanju, the biographical comedy-drama based on the life of actor Sanjay Dutt, has completed seven years since its release. To commemorate the milestone, actress Sonam Kapoor shared a touching throwback video on Instagram, rekindling memories from the film’s set.
Sonam’s Nostalgic Tribute
In a heartfelt Instagram Story posted on Saturday, Sonam Kapoor shared a montage featuring:
- Her scenes with Ranbir Kapoor
- Behind-the-scenes glimpses with director Rajkumar Hirani
- A cheerful video of the team celebrating the film’s wrap
The video captured the camaraderie on set and reminded fans of the power-packed ensemble that made Sanju one of the most successful films of 2018.
The Sanju Phenomenon
Directed and edited by Rajkumar Hirani, Sanju was jointly written by Hirani and Abhijat Joshi, and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Hirani under the banners Vinod Chopra Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films.
The film chronicled the controversial and emotional journey of Sanjay Dutt, portrayed by Ranbir Kapoor in a transformative performance. It covered Dutt’s:
- Battle with drug addiction
- Alleged links to the 1993 Bombay bombings
- Deep bond with his father Sunil Dutt (played by Paresh Rawal)
- Rise and fall in Bollywood
The film also starred Vicky Kaushal, Anushka Sharma, Manisha Koirala, Dia Mirza, Jim Sarbh, and Sonam Kapoor in key roles.
Upon release on June 29, 2018, Sanju shattered box office records, registering the biggest opening for any Indian film that year, and emerged as one of Ranbir Kapoor’s most celebrated performances.
From “Saawariya” to “Sanju”: A Ranbir-Sonam Full Circle
Interestingly, Sanju marked a cinematic reunion for Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor, who debuted together in 2007 in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic drama “Saawariya.” That film marked the beginning of two distinct careers in Bollywood, and Sanju was a nostalgic reminder of their shared screen legacy.
Sonam’s Return in “Blind”
After embracing motherhood in 2022 with the birth of her son Vayu, Sonam Kapoor made a comeback with the 2023 crime thriller “Blind.” Directed by Shome Makhija, the film saw her in the intense role of a visually impaired ex-cop.
Released as a JioCinema original, the film was a remake of the 2011 South Korean thriller of the same name. It featured a strong supporting cast including:
- Purab Kohli
- Shubham Saraf
- Vinay Pathak
- Lillete Dubey
- Javed Khan
Blind marked a bold return for Sonam, reinforcing her versatility in thrillers and social dramas following her award-winning performance in Neerja (2016).
