Taking to social media, Saxena accused the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of complicating the Supreme Court's modification of a National Green Tribunal (NGT) order regarding the cleaning of the Yamuna.
We hope that the supreme court would handle this unfounded accusation severely and take suo moto cognizance against the L-G's insinuations because contempt of court is a crime."
In his X posts, Saxena lamented the fact that despite the Chhath festival coming to a close and devotees offering prayers to the Sun god, the Yamuna remained dirty and polluted, with froth, sewer, and effluents still present in the river.
The Lieutenant Governor's comments come in the wake of the Supreme Court staying the NGT’s order nominating Saxena to head a high-level committee for the cleaning of the Yamuna.
The work on cleaning the Yamuna had initially started in line with the NGT's directives, but Saxena's recent comments suggest that the promises made to clean up the river have not been fulfilled.
The Delhi government has not yet responded to Saxena's remarks on the state of the Yamuna, but with both the Lieutenant Governor and the AAP government at odds over the issue, it remains to be seen how the situation will be addressed in the future.
