Delhi, India: In anticipation of a religious procession and a G20 carcade rehearsal in New Delhi, traffic disruptions are expected to impact parts of the city. The events, set to unfold over the next few days, have prompted the Delhi Police to issue advisories and encourage commuters to plan their routes accordingly.
Religious Procession for Chehlum:
A religious procession marking the 40-day mourning period (chehlum) of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson, Imam Hussain, is scheduled to take place. The procession will commence from Pahari Bhojla and is estimated to involve 5,000 to 6,000 participants. It is set to kick off around 8:30 am and will proceed through various significant locations, including Dargah Shah-e-Mardan and Jor Bagh.
G20 Carcade Rehearsal:
In preparation for the forthcoming meeting of heads of governments and states of the intergovernmental forum G20, a carcade rehearsal is underway. This rehearsal has already caused major traffic snarls in the city, with congestion reported on various routes.
Traffic Advisory:
The Delhi Police have issued a traffic advisory to inform commuters about the expected congestion. They anticipate that the following areas will be particularly affected until 1 pm due to carcade rehearsals and special traffic arrangements:
- Salimgarh Bypass
- Mahatma Gandhi Marg
- Bhairon Marg
- Bhairon Road
- Ring Road
- Mathura Road
- C-Hexagon
- Sardar Patel Marg
- Gurgaon Road
Moreover, vehicular traffic along the route of the religious procession may experience delays and congestion. Commuters are advised to avoid the affected areas and seek alternative routes if possible.
Precautions for Commuters:
Commuters heading to New Delhi Railway Station, especially in the afternoon, are urged to leave well in advance and account for possible delays on their routes. It is suggested to bypass Connaught Place and reach Ajmeri Gate through Tilak Marg, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, or Rajghat and Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, depending on the procession's movement.
Upcoming Gathering:
On Thursday, a gathering related to the Battle of Karbala is expected to take place in Jor Bagh, with VIPs including diplomats and ambassadors from Gulf Countries likely to attend. The event could attract a crowd of around 20,000 to 25,000 people, which may further affect traffic in the vicinity.
The Delhi Police are actively regulating traffic on 32 roads, including those along the Chehlum march route, Janpath, Baba Khadak Singh Marg, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Ashoka Road, Sansad Marg, and Barakhamba Road.
