Govt Reviews Fertiliser Supply Ahead of Kharif Season, Orders Crackdown on Black Marketing
New Delhi: Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Wednesday chaired a high-level review meeting to assess fertiliser availability and preparedness for the upcoming Kharif season, amid global uncertainty triggered by the Middle East conflict.
The meeting comes at a time when geopolitical tensions are raising concerns over global supply chains, including fertilisers and agro-inputs. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare said the review aimed to ensure uninterrupted and equitable distribution of resources to farmers.
Chouhan stressed the need to maintain adequate fertiliser supplies across the country and directed officials to accelerate the rollout of ‘Farmer IDs’ to enhance transparency in distribution. He also announced plans to engage with chief ministers and state agriculture ministers to strengthen coordination.
The minister issued strict instructions to curb black marketing and hoarding of fertilisers and seeds, warning against profiteering during the crisis. State governments have been urged to take stringent action against violators.
The meeting also reviewed the availability of agro-chemicals, essential gases for seed processing, and packaging materials for agricultural products such as milk. Coordination with the Ministry of Petroleum and other departments was emphasised to avoid disruptions.
A dedicated ‘Special Cell’ has been set up for round-the-clock monitoring of fertiliser, seed, and pesticide supplies. The cell will submit weekly reports to ensure timely intervention if shortages arise.
The proactive measures reflect the government’s attempt to safeguard agricultural productivity during a volatile global environment. With the Kharif season approaching, timely availability of inputs will be crucial for sustaining output.
The Centre’s review and preventive measures aim to ensure that farmers face no disruptions in accessing essential resources, even as global challenges persist.
Our Final Thoughts
The government’s focus on fertiliser supply and anti-hoarding measures highlights the importance of agriculture in India’s economic stability. In times of global uncertainty, ensuring timely access to inputs becomes critical for farmers’ livelihoods and food security. The introduction of monitoring systems like the Special Cell and Farmer IDs could improve transparency and efficiency in the long run. However, effective implementation at the ground level will determine how well these measures translate into real benefits for farmers.
