Sayani Gupta Launches Production Banner with Directorial Debut 'Aasmani'; Sets Sights on Global Co-Productions
MUMBAI — After spending over a decade cementing her position as a versatile talent across mainstream Hindi cinema and premium streaming platforms, Bollywood actress Sayani Gupta is officially expanding her footprint in the entertainment business. Launching her own banner, Sayani Gupta Movies, the actress is making her full-fledged production debut with the upcoming short film, Aasmani.
The move marks a significant evolution in Gupta's career, driven by a growing industry trend of actors taking creative control to champion ground-up storytelling.
Speaking exclusively on her transition into a producer, Gupta revealed that the shift has been a long-gestating ambition. “It has been a long dream. I've been wanting to tell a certain kind of stories and the idea is to be able to create an enabling space for collaboration," she said. Emphasizing a calculated business approach, she added, "We will go slowly but steadily, concentrating on one film at a time.”
A Labor of Love: Inside 'Aasmani'
Aasmani is not just a producing vehicle for Gupta; she has also written and directed the project. The ambitious short film boasts a strong ensemble cast led by veteran actress Revathy, alongside Daria Bedi and Abhay Kaul.
The production journey was extensive. Gupta spent over a year meticulously scouting locations across Maharashtra before setting up base in Pune. The choice of location holds deep personal significance, reflecting her connection to her alma mater, the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Industry insiders note that handling the dual responsibilities of directing and producing a maiden venture is a mammoth task, one that Gupta has navigated by building a robust support system.
Strong Industry Backing and Past Credits
While Aasmani is billed as her first "full-blown" production, Gupta is no stranger to the mechanics of filmmaking behind the camera. She previously tested the waters by co-producing projects like Where the Winds Blow and Upar Neeche, as well as acclaimed short films such as Dear Men and the Oscar-qualifying Shameless.
For Aasmani, she has secured significant industry backing. The film is supported by the Sumitra Gupta Foundation for Arts and One India Stories. Furthermore, the project has attracted heavyweight Executive Producers, including prominent filmmaker Nikkhil Advani, actress-producer Dia Mirza, and Ananya Rane, signaling strong market confidence in Gupta’s creative vision.
Quality Over Quantity: The Road Ahead
As Sayani Gupta Movies sets its foundation, the core philosophy remains strictly tethered to the craft. “For us the quality of writing, craft, storytelling will always take precedence, and for that to happen, the right kind of time, care and attention needs to be given to every project," Gupta emphasized.
Looking beyond the domestic market, the newly minted producer is already eyeing global horizons. Gupta confirmed she is currently developing two international co-productions spanning different genres, signaling a strategic effort to position her production house as a home for crossover storytelling.
