Rani Mukerji on Raising a Gen Alpha Child: ‘I’m Actually Scared of My Daughter’
MUMBAI: Actor Rani Mukerji has opened up about parenting in the digital age, offering candid insights into her close bond with her 10-year-old daughter Adira Chopra and how raising a Generation Alpha child is vastly different from her own upbringing.
Speaking on Spotlight Sessions, a podcast series on Zoom’s YouTube channel, Rani reflected on how each generation brings its own mindset and confidence.
“She also fires me. She is Gen Alpha, so she fires me, and I have to listen to her,” Rani said with a laugh. “Every generation changes. I used to get slaps from my mom. I can’t expect to do that with her because she would slap me back. Because she is an Alpha kid, I am very scared of her.”
A Very Different Childhood
Rani shared an anecdote that perfectly captured the contrast between generations. While she was attending the National Awards, Adira was busy jumping around at home, unaware of the magnitude of the moment.
“It’s very sweet,” Rani said, adding that Alpha children grow up with a sense of independence and self-awareness that earlier generations didn’t have at the same age.
Why Adira Hasn’t Watched All of Rani’s Films
The actor also spoke about Adira’s relationship with her work on screen, revealing that her daughter finds it difficult to watch her in emotionally intense roles.
“She likes to see me when I’m dancing and when I am happy on screen,” Rani explained. Among Adira’s favourites are Hichki, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, and Bunty Aur Babli.
However, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was too difficult for her. “In the first scene, I die, so she couldn’t go beyond that,” Rani said.
Adira’s reactions to her mother’s on-screen appearance have also been refreshingly honest. “When I am wearing makeup, she tells me, ‘Mamma, you are not looking like my mother.’ When I remove my makeup and come to her, she says, ‘Now you look like my mother,’” Rani added.
A Private Family Life
Rani Mukerji is married to filmmaker Aditya Chopra, with the couple tying the knot in a private ceremony in April 2014. Known for keeping their personal lives away from the spotlight, they welcomed Adira in December 2015, over a year after their marriage.
Despite being one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable faces, Rani has consistently maintained a low-profile family life, choosing to keep her daughter away from public glare.
Rani Mukerji Gears Up for Mardaani 3
On the professional front, Rani is preparing for the release of Mardaani 3, the third instalment of her popular crime-thriller franchise. The film is written by Aayush Gupta, directed by Abhiraj Minwala, and produced by Aditya Chopra
Mardaani 3 is scheduled to hit theatres on January 30, 2026, with Rani once again reprising her role as the fearless cop Shivani Shivaji Roy.
Our Thoughts
Rani Mukerji’s reflections strike a relatable chord in a time when parenting norms are rapidly evolving. Her honesty about navigating authority, empathy, and emotional boundaries with a Gen Alpha child highlights how parenting today is less about control and more about conversation. As she balances motherhood with a demanding career, Rani’s experiences underline a broader truth—raising children in the digital era requires flexibility, patience, and a willingness to grow alongside them.
