If We Start Replacing Actors for Trolls, We Shouldn’t Make Films’: Bhushan Kumar on Diljit Dosanjh Backlash
T-Series head and producer Bhushan Kumar has spoken out about the social media backlash faced by Diljit Dosanjh during the making of Border 2. In a recent interview, Bhushan explained why the makers stood by Diljit despite online pressure and criticism, stressing that creative decisions cannot be dictated by trolls.
His remarks come as Border 2 continues its strong run at the box office.
Border 2, co-produced by T-Series, has emerged as one of the biggest openers of 2026. In just four days, the film has collected around ₹180 crore net in India and ₹251 crore gross worldwide. It also recorded a ₹80 crore global collection on Republic Day.
Speaking about the film’s success, Bhushan said, “The positivity we are getting is more important than the money. When 95% of people say the film lived up to expectations, that’s a big achievement.”
However, he also addressed online box office comparisons, calling them unnecessary and misleading.
“The numbers excite you because they show how many people are watching the film. But constant comparisons are not healthy,” he added.
During production, Diljit Dosanjh faced backlash over past remarks related to farmers’ protests, with some demanding his removal from the film.
Responding to this, Bhushan stated, “If, because of trolls, a company like us starts replacing people, then we shouldn’t make movies.”
Director Anurag Singh, who has worked extensively with Diljit, also defended the actor. “People assume things without knowing him personally. He isn’t what they think he is,” he said.
Several industry insiders have praised the makers for standing firm and prioritising professionalism.
Background of the Project
Border 2 is a spiritual sequel to JP Dutta’s 1997 classic Border. The film stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty, and is directed by Anurag Singh.
Though reviews were mixed, performances, especially by Varun and Diljit, received positive feedback.
With strong box office momentum, Border 2 is expected to cross ₹300 crore globally. Bhushan Kumar is also gearing up for multiple big-budget projects in 2026.
Our Final Thoughts
Bhushan Kumar’s statement highlights an important reality of today’s film industry, where social media reactions often threaten to influence creative decisions. By standing with Diljit Dosanjh, the Border 2 team sent a clear message that professionalism and talent matter more than online noise.
With collections crossing ₹250 crore worldwide in just four days, the film’s performance has validated the makers’ confidence. It also shows that audiences continue to prioritise content and performances over controversies.
In an era of instant outrage, producers face increasing pressure to respond to public sentiment. However, giving in to such demands can weaken creative independence and set unhealthy precedents.
Border 2’s success suggests that consistency and conviction still hold value in Bollywood. Bhushan’s approach reflects long-term thinking, where respect for artists and storytelling takes precedence over temporary trends.
As the industry moves forward, this episode may encourage more filmmakers to take principled stands and protect creative freedom, even in the face of intense online scrutiny.
