Russia Condemns US Threats Over Iran, Warns of ‘Disastrous Consequences’
AP
New Delhi: Russia has sharply criticised what it described as “subversive external interference” in Iran’s internal affairs, warning that US threats of military action are “categorically unacceptable” and could have serious consequences for the Middle East and global security.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Moscow firmly opposes foreign involvement in Iran’s internal crisis, echoing Tehran’s long-standing position that unrest in the country is being fuelled by outside powers.
Trump’s Comments Raise Tensions
The Russian reaction followed remarks by US President Donald Trump on January 13, in which he said he had cancelled talks with Iranian officials and publicly backed nationwide protests against Tehran’s crackdown. Trump warned Iran against using lethal force and said Washington was closely monitoring developments.
Human rights groups have reported that more than 2,000 people have been killed and thousands detained since protests erupted in late December, initially over economic grievances before expanding into wider anti-government demonstrations.
Iran Pushes Back Against External Pressure
Iranian authorities have imposed internet restrictions and accused the US and Israel of instigating unrest. Tehran has rejected Washington’s statements as violations of international law and sovereignty, while also condemning recent US measures, including new tariffs targeting countries trading with Iran.
Global Response Remains Divided
International reactions to the crisis have varied. While some Western governments have highlighted human rights concerns, others have urged restraint and warned against escalation, underscoring divisions over how to respond to Iran’s internal unrest.
Our Thoughts
Russia’s strong response highlights widening geopolitical fault lines over Iran. As protests continue and rhetoric hardens, the risk of escalation remains high, making restraint and diplomacy critical to preventing a broader regional crisis.
