Lalremsiami Set to Create History as First Arjuna Awardee From Mizoram
Ranchi: Indian women’s hockey team forward Lalremsiami is set to become the first sportsperson from Mizoram to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award, according to sources. The official announcement is expected in the coming days, marking a historic moment for the northeastern State and Indian hockey.
Popularly known as ‘Siami’, Lalremsiami made her senior international debut in 2017 during a Test series against Belarus. Since then, she has established herself as a key forward for India, featuring in 177 international matches and scoring 67 goals. One of the defining moments of her career came at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where India reached the semifinals under then coach Sjoerd Marijne.
The Olympics held deep personal significance for Lalremsiami. Her father, who passed away in 2019 while she was competing at the Hockey Series Finals in Hiroshima, had dreamed of seeing her play at the Games. She went on to fulfil that dream in Tokyo, becoming the first woman athlete from Mizoram to compete at the Olympics.
Lalremsiami has also represented India at two Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze medal in Birmingham. She has been part of Indian teams that secured a silver and a bronze at the Asian Games and has featured in two World Cups. Her junior career was equally impressive, highlighted by a silver medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games and the FIH Rising Star of the Year award in 2019.
Currently playing for the Shrachi Bengal Tigers in the Women’s Hockey India League, Lalremsiami remains focused on helping India qualify for the upcoming World Cup.
Our Final Thoughts
Lalremsiami’s journey reflects resilience, excellence and inspiration. Her expected Arjuna Award is a fitting recognition of her contribution to Indian hockey and her role in bringing Mizoram onto the national sporting map.
