L&T Mumbai Open WTA 125K Set for Strong International Line-up in Fifth Edition
MUMBAI: A competitive international field will be on display at the fifth edition of the L&T Mumbai Open next month, reinforcing its reputation as one of the biggest women’s tennis events on the Indian sporting calendar.
The tournament will be held at the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association (MSLTA) courts in Mumbai. The qualifying rounds are scheduled from January 30 to February 1, followed by the main draw from February 2 to February 8.
Over the years, the Mumbai Open has emerged as a crucial platform for Indian players to test themselves against quality international opposition, while also attracting a steadily rising overseas contingent.
Strong Overseas Presence Confirmed
This year’s entry list underlines the tournament’s growing global appeal, with several established names set to compete in both singles and doubles. The international field includes Lulu Sun, Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja, Australia’s Kimberly Birrell, Belgium’s Hanne Vandewinkel, and Chinese Taipei’s Joanna Garland.
Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, the runner-up at the 2025 edition, will return to Mumbai, along with France’s Leolia Jeajean, adding further depth to the draw.
Boost for Indian Tennis
The L&T Mumbai Open has played a significant role in India’s recent progress on the women’s circuit. In the previous edition, 16-year-old Maaya Rajeswaran grabbed headlines with a breakthrough run to the semifinals, signalling the emergence of a promising new talent.
Several other Indian players, including Ankita Raina, Sahaja Yamalapalli, Shrivalli Bhamidipaty, and Prarthana Thombare, benefited from high-quality match exposure ahead of international assignments.
The tournament has also served as vital preparation for competitions such as the Billie Jean King Cup Asia-Oceania Group I, helping Indian players adapt to the intensity of elite-level tennis.
Organisers Highlight Growing Status
MSLTA officials believe the event has steadily carved out a niche for itself in the international tennis calendar.
“The L&T Mumbai Open has steadily grown into a marquee event on the Indian tennis calendar,” said Sunder Iyer, honorary secretary of the MSLTA. “We are delighted to return with a highly competitive field and continue providing Indian players the opportunity to compete at a high international level.”
With a strong mix of experienced overseas professionals and emerging Indian talent, the 2026 edition is expected to deliver a week of high-quality tennis and valuable ranking opportunities.
Our Thoughts
The continued rise of the L&T Mumbai Open reflects the steady progress of women’s tennis in India. By consistently attracting international talent while nurturing homegrown players, the tournament bridges the gap between domestic competition and the global circuit. As Indian players look to establish themselves on the WTA Tour, platforms like the Mumbai Open remain essential for building confidence, exposure, and competitive depth.
