Indian, Pakistani Troops Exchange Fire Along LoC in Keran Sector
Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district during the night of January 20–21, defence sources said. The brief skirmish occurred amid heightened surveillance activity by the Indian Army and comes at a time when security forces remain on alert against possible winter infiltration attempts.
No casualties were reported on either side, officials confirmed.
What Happened in Keran
According to defence sources, the exchange of fire took place when troops of the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles were installing high-tech surveillance cameras in the Keran Bala area. The equipment was being set up to strengthen monitoring and eliminate blind spots along the Line of Control.
During the installation process, Pakistani troops allegedly fired two rounds of small arms fire in an attempt to disrupt the activity. Indian troops responded with a single, calibrated retaliatory shot, following standard operating procedures to avoid escalation.
The incident occurred in the Keran sector, located in Kupwara district, an area considered sensitive due to its proximity to traditional infiltration routes.
Security Response After the Firing
Following the exchange, Indian security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the surrounding dense forest areas. Officials suspect the firing may have been intended to divert attention and facilitate an infiltration attempt under cover of darkness.
Security has since been tightened across the sector, with additional troops deployed and surveillance intensified. The army is continuing to upgrade technical monitoring systems in the region, particularly during the winter months when infiltration attempts are historically reported.
Officials said the situation along the LoC remains under control and is being closely monitored.
