Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has revealed that the idea behind his multi-billion-dollar company came to him not in an office or lab, but while swimming with a pod of dolphins off the coast of Hawaii. In a resurfaced interview with TBPN, Benioff described the moment as a “vision” that fundamentally altered his life and career.
The Moment in the Ocean That Changed Everything
Recalling the experience, Benioff said he was swimming alongside nearly 100 dolphins near Hawaii, where he lives, when the idea for Salesforce suddenly became clear to him.
He described feeling deeply connected to the pod, saying he was “one with the dolphins.” It was during this moment of calm and immersion in nature that he envisioned what Salesforce could become — a completely new way of delivering enterprise software.

Walking Away From Oracle and Betting on the Vision
At the time, Benioff held a senior position at Oracle, one of the most powerful technology companies in the world. Quitting such a role was a major risk — but Benioff believed the vision demanded action.
He soon walked into the office of Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, who was both his mentor and employer, and told him he planned to resign. Instead of discouraging him, Ellison backed the idea.
Ellison provided Benioff with an initial investment of $2 million, giving him the capital needed to bring the vision to life. That decision, made 26 years ago, laid the foundation for Salesforce, which would go on to redefine cloud computing and enterprise software.
An Idea Rooted in India and Spiritual Guidance
While the dolphin encounter crystallised the vision, Benioff has said the roots of Salesforce go back even further — to the late 1990s and a visit to India.
During a trip to Kerala in 1996–97, Benioff met his spiritual mentor, Mata Amritanandamayi, widely known as Amma. He shared with her his ideas about creating a new technology and business model.
According to Benioff, Amma reminded him that innovation should always be tied to service and giving back to society. That conversation deeply influenced Salesforce’s philosophy and later shaped its commitment to philanthropy.

Salesforce was not only built as a technology disruptor but also as a values-driven organisation. Benioff introduced the “1-1-1 model,” dedicating one percent of the company’s equity, product, and employee time to charitable causes.
