Australia has announced significant reforms to its international education and migration systems, positioning itself as a top global destination for high-quality students and young professionals. The move comes amid rising concerns among some Indian families following isolated racism-related rallies and negativity amplified on social media.
Julian Hill, Australia’s Assistant Minister for International Education, said these incidents do not reflect the country’s true culture. “Australia is the safest country in the world and one of the most successful multicultural societies,” he said, noting that social media often magnifies fringe groups.
Indians remain one of Australia’s fastest-growing migrant communities, with Hindus and Sikhs forming nearly 4% of the national population. Cities like Melbourne—home to almost 40% of the Indian community—host Diwali celebrations, cultural festivals and the world’s largest Indian film festival outside India.
Hill stressed that Australia’s education model focuses on safety, quality learning and strong industry integration. With nine universities ranked in the global top 100, the country offers strong value for investment. Students can work 24 hours a week but must show genuine financial capacity.
He also warned against fraudulent documentation, noting cases of fake English test scores and bank statements. “Genuine students have nothing to worry,” he said.
Australia is encouraging more enrolment in engineering, sciences and health. Hill highlighted South India, including Telangana, as a rising hub of innovation.
A major highlight is the MATES programme, offering up to 3,000 visas to top Indian graduates in IT, science and technology. Selected candidates can work in Australia for two to three years, strengthening long-term talent ties between both nations.
