Raja Raghuvanshi Murder Case: Wife Sonam Surrenders in Ghazipur, 3 Accomplices Arrested, 1 on the Run
The Trending People | Shillong/Ghazipur | June 9, 2025 — The gruesome murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi during his honeymoon in Meghalaya has taken a dramatic turn. On Sunday night, his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi, accused of masterminding the murder by hiring contract killers, surrendered in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur. With this, four arrests have been made in the sensational case that has rattled the country, while one suspect remains absconding.
According to senior officials, Sonam was under mounting pressure from the multi-state investigation and surrendered at Nandganj police station late Sunday.
“Sonam surrendered under pressure last night. She will be brought back to Meghalaya for court proceedings,” said Meghalaya IGP Dalton P. Marak to IANS.
Honeymoon Turns to Horror
Raja and Sonam, newly married and on their honeymoon, arrived in Meghalaya on May 21. Two days later, on May 23, they reportedly went missing while sightseeing. What followed was a multi-agency search operation spanning Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
On June 2, ten days after their disappearance, Raja’s body was found in a deep gorge below the Weisawdong Parking Lot at Riat Arliang. A blood-stained machete, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered nearby. Sonam had vanished without a trace, prompting national attention and suspicion.
A Chilling Conspiracy Unfolds
Sources close to the investigation told The Trending People that Sonam conspired with her former lover, Raj Kushwaha, to eliminate Raja. Kushwaha, along with three other men allegedly hired as contract killers, are believed to have travelled to Meghalaya to execute the murder.
According to call detail records and GPS evidence obtained by police, frequent communication between Sonam and Kushwaha continued even after her wedding. The honeymoon was pre-planned as a trap, with one-way tickets booked in advance, officials confirmed.
Arrests and Investigative Breakthroughs
With Sonam’s surrender, police have now arrested four accused, including Raj Kushwaha, and identified three executioners: Vicky Thakur, Anand, and Akash. Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang confirmed that investigations are ongoing and interrogations are providing crucial leads.
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh ADG (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said Sonam was found at a roadside eatery named Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur highway. She was sent to Sadar Hospital for medical examination and is currently in custody at the One Stop Centre in Ghazipur.
Political and Public Reactions
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma posted on X (formerly Twitter):
“Within 7 days, a major breakthrough has been achieved… 3 assailants from Madhya Pradesh arrested, female has surrendered, operation still on to catch 1 more assailant. Well done, Meghalaya Police.”
However, despite the breakthrough, public anger and family frustration remain high. Both Raja and Sonam’s families have demanded a CBI probe, citing alleged lapses by local police early in the investigation. They pointed to CCTV footage and GPS tracking data from a rented scooty that reportedly showed the presence of other individuals with the couple — evidence they claim was initially ignored.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking a central agency probe to ensure impartial justice.
One Accused Still Missing
While four arrests have been confirmed, one accused is still absconding. Coordinated raids are being conducted in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh to trace the missing suspect.
Senior police officials have urged the public and media to avoid speculation, emphasizing that the case is sensitive and still under investigation.
A Case That Shook the Nation
What started as a honeymoon trip turned into a chilling murder mystery — one involving betrayal, a love triangle, and a premeditated plot across state lines. The gruesome details and multi-state operation have gripped the nation, with social media flooded with calls for justice.
As the investigation moves forward, all eyes will remain on the Meghalaya Police, who have promised transparency and swift legal action.
