Security Tightened at Shree Jagannath Temple, Hirakud Dam and DRDO Sites Amid India-Pakistan Tensions
Bhubaneswar | May 9, 2025 — Security has been strengthened at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri as tensions continue to rise between India and Pakistan following recent military actions and cross-border threats.
A large number of security personnel have been deployed in and around the temple to ensure the safety of devotees and the historic shrine. This comes after a recent security audit by the National Security Guard (NSG).
Round-the-Clock Monitoring and Strict Entry Protocols
Officials said that 24/7 monitoring, increased patrolling, and deployment of special forces are now in place. Entry protocols for the temple have also been made stricter to prevent any potential threat.
A senior police officer said,
“These measures are precautionary but necessary. The safety of our religious and cultural heritage is our top priority.”
Hirakud Dam Closed to Tourists
In Sambalpur district, authorities have banned tourist entry to the Hirakud Dam, which is the longest earthen dam in the world, until further notice. The decision was taken to ensure public safety and protect critical infrastructure.
Security Also Increased at Key Locations Across Odisha
Heightened security has also been reported at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar and the Paradip Port in Jagatsinghpur district.
In Balasore district, a high-level emergency meeting was scheduled for Friday afternoon to discuss security at critical defence installations. These include the Integrated Test Range (ITR) and Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) in Chandipur, both operated by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
DIG (Eastern Range) Satyajit Naik called for the meeting in light of the “prevailing war-like situation” and the need to strengthen security around defense facilities.
Pakistan Drone Attacks Repulsed
On the night of May 8 and 9, the Indian Army reported that Pakistan launched drone attacks and violated ceasefire agreements along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian forces effectively repelled all attacks.
“Multiple drones and munitions were used by Pakistan along the Western border,” said an Army statement. “Our defense systems responded promptly and neutralized the threats.”
