New Delhi | May 9, 2025 — India’s leading banks, including the State Bank of India (SBI) and Punjab National Bank (PNB), have issued statements confirming that all ATMs, cash deposit machines, and digital banking services are operating normally.
The clarifications come in response to fake news circulating on social media, claiming that banking services may be disrupted in the coming days due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.
SBI Warns Against Fake Social Media Posts
SBI, the country's largest public sector bank, reassured customers on X (formerly Twitter):
“All our ATMs, CDMs/ADWMs and digital services are fully operational and available for public use.”
The bank urged customers to avoid believing or sharing unverified information and rely only on official announcements.
PNB, Other Banks Reassure Public
The Punjab National Bank also confirmed that:
“All our digital services too are operating smoothly, ensuring a seamless banking experience from the comfort of your home.”
Other major banks like Canara Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, and Punjab & Sind Bank echoed similar messages to calm public concerns.
Finance Minister to Review Cybersecurity Preparedness
The Union Finance Ministry announced that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will conduct a high-level review meeting today evening to evaluate the cybersecurity preparedness of banks and financial institutions.
This step underscores the government’s proactive stance in ensuring secure and uninterrupted financial services, even amid heightened national security concerns.
Indian Oil: Fuel and LPG Stocks Are Ample
Meanwhile, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) assured the public that fuel and LPG supplies are fully stocked and stable across the country.
“There is no need for panic buying—fuel and LPG is readily available at all our outlets,” IOC said.
The company urged citizens to remain calm and avoid unnecessary rush to petrol pumps:
“Help us serve you better by staying calm and avoiding unnecessary rush. This will keep our supply lines running seamlessly and ensure uninterrupted fuel access for all.”
Traders' Body Confirms No Shortage of Essentials
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), representing over 90 million traders, also issued a public statement refuting rumors of foodgrain or essential item shortages.
“All commodities are abundantly available in the markets, and the government has adequate reserves. No citizen needs to hoard or stockpile goods,” said Praveen Khandelwal, Secretary General of CAIT and MP from Delhi's Chandni Chowk.
He added that traders are fully committed to maintaining the supply chain and are even prepared to deliver essentials to people’s homes if required:
“Just like during the Covid period, traders will act as economic soldiers to keep the nation’s markets stable.”
Public Urged to Stay Calm and Trust Verified Sources
As misinformation spreads online, authorities are urging citizens to remain alert and verify facts before forwarding messages or taking action based on social media posts.
With government bodies, banks, fuel suppliers, and trade associations all confirming normal operations, there is no cause for panic or disruption of daily life.
