Mumbai | May 9, 2025 — In a strong statement aimed at curbing misinformation, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Friday announced that the government will take strict action against anyone spreading fake news on social media, especially in light of the escalating conflict between India and Pakistan.
The warning comes after a high-level security review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, where preparations across the state were evaluated.
Fake News a Serious Crime, Says Shinde
Speaking to reporters following the security meeting, Eknath Shinde stressed the importance of avoiding the spread of misinformation, especially content related to military activities.
"Spreading fake news on social media is a serious crime. Strict action will be taken," Shinde said.
"We request people not to film or share videos of military or Coast Guard preparations. It's vital from a security point of view."
He further informed that the state government will soon hold discussions with the Navy, Air Force, Army, and Indian Coast Guard to ensure coordinated efforts for safeguarding the state.
Mock Drills, Coastal Security, and Civil Cooperation
Shinde also mentioned that mock drills have been conducted in some areas and more are scheduled in the coming days. To strengthen coastal security, coordination between local coastal communities and the police is being intensified.
"A detailed discussion was held to ensure Mumbai and Maharashtra remain safe under all circumstances," he added.
CM Devendra Fadnavis Orders Statewide Precautions
At the same meeting, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a series of instructions aimed at enhancing preparedness and spreading awareness across the state. Key directives include:
1. District-Level Emergency Measures
- Conduct mock drills in every district.
- Set up district-level war rooms.
- Ensure emergency funds are available for urgent purchases.
- Grant 1-hour approval window for any critical proposals.
2. Blackout Guidelines and Awareness
- Instruct citizens to use dark-colored curtains or blackout glasses.
- Share educational videos with students and the public explaining blackout protocols.
- Encourage cooperative housing societies to participate in awareness campaigns.
3. Cyber and Social Media Monitoring
- Direct district-level cyber cells to monitor social media activity.
- Identify and act against accounts that spread misinformation or assist hostile entities.
- Conduct a cyber audit of critical government infrastructure to prevent cyberattacks.
- "If anyone helps the enemy or spreads false information, strict action must be taken immediately," said Fadnavis.
Security Forces and Coastal Vigilance to Be Strengthened
To prevent any breach through the sea route, fishing trawlers will be hired as needed to support coastal security operations. The state government will also invite senior officials from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard for greater coordination.
CM Fadnavis urged all departments to be on high alert and increase combing operations and police patrols. He reiterated that no one should film or broadcast military operations, especially during tense situations, as it could compromise national security.
Union War Book to Be Studied Thoroughly
The Chief Minister directed all relevant departments to study the Central Government’s ‘Union War Book’—a confidential manual detailing national emergency response protocols—and implement its guidelines where appropriate.
This move is aimed at ensuring all officials and citizens understand their roles and responsibilities during emergencies such as wars, cyberattacks, and blackouts.
Public Communication System in the Works
CM Fadnavis emphasized the importance of keeping the public well-informed with accurate, real-time information. Plans are underway to establish a centralized communication system to ensure citizens receive verified updates through mobile apps or public sirens during critical situations.
Conclusion: Citizens Must Stay Vigilant and Responsible
The Maharashtra government is clearly gearing up its civil and military coordination in response to rising cross-border tensions. With the threat of cyberattacks and misinformation looming large, the administration has urged citizens to act responsibly, especially on social media.
The message from both Deputy CM Shinde and CM Fadnavis is clear:
Support the nation by staying alert, informed, and responsible.
