Rajkot: The Niranjan Shah Stadium has been Ravindra Jadeja’s home ground for nearly 25 years, but his return this week comes with added pressure. Recalled to India’s ODI squad at the expense of Axar Patel after retiring from T20Is, the 37-year-old all-rounder will be keen to make a decisive impact in the second ODI against New Zealand on Wednesday.
Since his return to the 50-over format in November, Jadeja has featured in four ODIs. He made useful batting contributions against South Africa but struggled in the opening match against New Zealand in Vadodara. More concerning has been his bowling form, with just one wicket at an average of 213 and an economy rate of 6.26.
Known for his control and consistency, Jadeja is aware that his performances this home season have fallen short of expectations. He put in extended practice on Tuesday, spending time with both bat and ball ahead of the Rajkot encounter.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak backed the veteran, stressing his fitness, experience, and familiarity with local conditions as key positives going into the match.
Our Thoughts
Ravindra Jadeja’s return to Rajkot offers a timely opportunity to reset his ODI campaign. With competition for all-rounder spots intensifying, a strong showing at his home venue could help him reassert his value to the team and silence questions around his place in the format.
