Indian Embassy Issues Urgent Advisory, Asks Nationals to Leave Iran Amid Escalating Unrest

The Indian Embassy in Tehran on Wednesday issued a fresh and urgent advisory asking Indian nationals in Iran to leave the country by available means of transport, citing a rapidly deteriorating security situation amid escalating unrest.
In its latest advisory, the embassy urged Indian citizens to remain highly vigilant, stay in constant touch with diplomatic officials, and be prepared for immediate travel if required. The warning comes as protests across Iran continue to intensify, entering their third week with growing violence and uncertainty.
Embassy Urges Readiness and Document Safety
The embassy specifically advised all Indian nationals to keep their travel and immigration documents readily accessible, including passports and identification papers.
“All Indian nationals in Iran are requested to have their travel and immigration documents, including passports and IDs, readily available with them. They are requested to contact the Indian Embassy for any assistance in this regard,” the advisory stated.
The embassy further emphasised that Indian citizens, including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists, should leave Iran using any available transport, including commercial flights.
Emergency Helplines Issued for Indian Nationals
To support those requiring assistance, the embassy shared multiple emergency helpline numbers and an official email address for consular support. Indian nationals and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) were also advised to exercise due caution, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, and closely monitor local media for updates.
The advisory stressed the importance of remaining in regular contact with the Indian mission as the situation continues to evolve.
Registration Requested Amid Internet Disruptions
The embassy also asked all Indian nationals in Iran who have not yet registered to do so through the Ministry of External Affairs’ online portal. Acknowledging possible internet disruptions inside Iran, the advisory noted that family members in India could complete the registration process on behalf of their relatives if necessary.
The fresh warning follows an earlier advisory issued by the Government of India on January 5, 2025, reflecting growing concern over the rapidly changing conditions on the ground.
Protests Intensify Across Iran
Iran has witnessed widespread anti-government protests since December, with violence escalating in several cities. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), at least 2,403 protesters have been killed since demonstrations began, while thousands more have been injured or detained during security operations.
The unfolding situation has raised international concern, prompting several countries to issue travel warnings for their citizens in Iran.
Our Thoughts
The Indian government’s renewed advisory underscores the seriousness of the situation unfolding in Iran. With protests intensifying and communication networks facing disruptions, timely evacuation and preparedness are critical for ensuring the safety of Indian nationals. Such advisories highlight the importance of proactive diplomatic engagement during international crises. As the situation remains fluid, continued coordination between citizens and diplomatic missions will be essential in preventing avoidable risks and ensuring safe exits.
