IND vs NZ: Rohit Sharma Fails to Convert Start Again in Rajkot ODI
PTI
Rajkot: India’s opener Rohit Sharma once again failed to convert a promising start into a big score during the second ODI against New Zealand at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. Batting on a surface that offered ideal conditions for run-making, Rohit looked set for a substantial innings before his dismissal.
After beginning cautiously, Rohit accelerated during the first powerplay, striking four boundaries and putting pressure on the New Zealand bowlers. Kyle Jamieson and Zakary Foulkes maintained a disciplined line early on, but Rohit began finding the fence regularly from the sixth over.
However, the Indian captain could not build on his start and was dismissed by Kristian Clarke in the 13th over. The pattern mirrored the first ODI in Vadodara, where Rohit scored 26 off 29 balls but failed to convert it into a significant score.
Rohit’s Strong Form Despite Missed Conversions
Despite these missed opportunities, Rohit has been in strong form since returning to international cricket in October 2025. He finished the year with 650 runs in 14 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate exceeding 100, including two centuries and four half-centuries, with a top score of 121.
Kaif Explains Kohli’s ODI Edge
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif weighed in on the comparison between Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, stating that Kohli’s ability to convert starts consistently keeps him ahead in ODI cricket.
Kaif pointed out that Kohli’s focus on playing long, match-winning innings separates him from Rohit, particularly in the 50-over format. He also referenced Kohli’s visible frustration after his dismissal in the first ODI as a sign of his high standards and commitment to consistency.
At the time of reporting, Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer were at the crease, with Shubman Gill already scoring a half-century. India currently lead the three-match ODI series 1-0 following their four-wicket win in Vadodara.
Our Thoughts
Rohit Sharma’s form remains encouraging, but repeated failures to convert starts into big scores could invite scrutiny as the series progresses. In contrast, Virat Kohli’s consistency continues to underline why he remains India’s most reliable ODI batter in pressure situations.
