BREAKING | Gurugram Sees ‘Sub-Zero’ Claim as Cold Wave Grips North India
As north India continues to shiver under an intense cold wave, a weather enthusiast on Tuesday claimed that parts of Gurugram witnessed sub-zero temperatures, recording –0.9°C on a personal device and reporting “massive ground frost and ice” in suburban areas.
Weather watcher Navdeep Dahiya shared the observation on X (formerly Twitter), posting visuals of frost and ice on the ground for the second consecutive morning. He also claimed that several pockets across the wider Delhi-NCR region experienced similar conditions.
The claim comes a day after Gurugram recorded a historic low of 0.6°C, the coldest minimum temperature in the city in nearly five decades.
However, official data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) presented a different picture. According to the IMD, Gurugram’s minimum temperature on Tuesday stood at 3.3°C, indicating that while conditions remained bitterly cold, the city did not officially enter sub-zero territory.
The severe cold has tightened its grip across Haryana, Punjab and Delhi. Chandigarh recorded a minimum of 2.8°C, its coldest in nine years. In Punjab, Ballowal Saunkhri touched 0°C, while Bathinda, Ludhiana, Patiala and Amritsar reported near-freezing temperatures. Haryana’s Hisar and Narnaul dipped to 1.5°C and 1.8°C respectively.
Delhi remained under cold-wave conditions for the second straight day, with the minimum temperature settling at around 3°C — more than four degrees below normal — making it the coldest January day in the capital since 2023. Dense fog and chilly winds continued to disrupt morning travel.
The IMD has issued an orange alert till January 13, warning of cold wave to severe cold wave conditions, dense fog and ground frost across Haryana, Delhi and adjoining regions. Meteorologists said temperatures are likely to stay unusually low for the next few days before a gradual rise later in the week.
