Amandeep Lakra Steps Out of Gonzalo Peillat’s Shadow to Shine as Hyderabad Toofans’ Penalty Corner Ace
From playing second fiddle to a global star to becoming the go-to specialist for his franchise, Amandeep Lakra has quietly scripted one of the most impressive individual stories of the ongoing Hockey India League season.
Last year, Lakra had to operate in the shadow of German drag-flicking legend Gonzalo Peillat at Hyderabad Toofans. Despite limited opportunities, the Odisha-born defender made his mark in his debut HIL season, scoring five goals and finishing fifth among penalty corner scorers — an impressive return considering the competition for chances.
This season, circumstances changed dramatically. With Peillat sidelined due to injury, Toofans head coach Pasha Gademan handed Lakra the responsibility of being the team’s first-choice drag-flicker. The 23-year-old has seized the moment with composure and maturity well beyond his years.
Delivering Under Pressure
Lakra has already netted five goals in the current edition, placing him fourth among penalty corner specialists — behind elite names such as Kane Russell (10 goals), Alexander Hendrickx (8), and Tom Boon (6). He is also joint-fifth among overall scorers in the tournament.
For a player stepping into a leadership role for the first time at this level, the numbers underline not just consistency, but also mental strength.
“The coach’s trust is the biggest thing. It boosts my confidence,” Lakra told The Hindu. “Last season I got less chances, but this season I am getting more.”
Learning from a Role Model
Lakra credits much of his development to working closely with Peillat last season. Rather than being intimidated by the star presence, he chose to absorb every lesson.
“I follow Gonzalo a lot. He keeps it simple,” Lakra said. “I learnt a lot from him last season and asked him how he became the top-scorer in the Rio Olympics.”
One piece of advice, in particular, stayed with him. “He told me to keep it on the frame of the goalpost as it gives more chances to score. Even if we don’t score directly, teammates can finish off rebounds.”
That simplicity has translated into effectiveness this season. “Gonzalo’s absence has given me a great opportunity. I am utilising his tips and have got success. Variations are decided by the coach. My job is to implement those.”
More Than Just a Drag-Flicker
Despite his growing reputation as a penalty corner specialist, Lakra remains grounded about his broader responsibilities on the field. A defender by trade, he is conscious that his value extends beyond goals.
“If I am not able to score, there’s no need to panic,” he said. “I also need to focus on my defence as well.”
This balanced mindset reflects his all-round development — a trait that selectors tend to value highly at the international level.
Knocking on the Senior Team Door
Hailing from Odisha’s famed hockey nursery Sundargarh district, Lakra has already represented India at the junior level, featuring in the Junior World Cup and the Asia Cup. Performances like these in the HIL only strengthen his case for elevation to the senior national side.
With India constantly searching for reliable drag-flick options and defenders who can contribute offensively, Lakra’s emergence comes at an opportune time.
Our Thoughts
Amandeep Lakra’s rise this season is a reminder that opportunity favours preparation. Thrust into a leadership role after Gonzalo Peillat’s injury, he has responded with composure, efficiency, and tactical discipline. Beyond the goals, his emphasis on defensive responsibility and learning reflects a maturity that could serve Indian hockey well in the years ahead. If this trajectory continues, Lakra’s transition from promising junior to senior international may be closer than it appears.
