Mary Kom Inaugurates 9th Mangaluru Kambala Amid Massive Turnout
Mangaluru: The ninth edition of the Mangaluru Kambala was formally inaugurated on Friday at Goldfinch City, Bangrakuluru, drawing thousands of spectators from across Karnataka and beyond. The traditional buffalo race event was led by Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Capt Brijesh Chowta and marked by the presence of former Indian Olympic boxing champion Mary Kom as the chief guest.
Addressing the gathering, Mary Kom connected the spirit of Kambala with rural sports culture, noting its deep roots in village life and tradition. She highlighted the importance of preserving indigenous sporting events, stating that such traditions hold cultural value that is unique to the region. The former world champion also congratulated the organisers for successfully hosting the event for the ninth consecutive year.
The event witnessed participation from nearly 170 pairs of buffaloes, competing across multiple categories, making it one of the most vibrant editions of Mangaluru Kambala in recent years. Winners from various races were honoured by Mary Kom, adding to the significance of the occasion.

During the inauguration, Capt Brijesh Chowta emphasised the need to counter misinformation about Dakshina Kannada and underlined the role of local participation in shaping the region’s future. He reiterated the vision of building a progressive and developed Mangaluru while preserving its cultural identity.
A special patriotic segment marked the celebration of 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, where 150 female students dressed in white rendered India’s national song, creating a moment of unity and national pride at the venue.

This year’s Kambala went beyond sport, featuring five special initiatives. These included an art exhibition on the life and legacy of Rani Abbakka, a historic queen known for her bravery, and a tree plantation drive under the Prime Minister’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
The event also honoured entrepreneurs through the ‘Back to Ooru’ programme, aimed at encouraging local enterprise, and included an outreach visit to an old-age home, reflecting a commitment to social inclusion and community welfare.
