IndiGo Appoints Global Aviation Expert to Lead Independent Review of Recent Operational Disruptions

IndiGo has appointed Chief Aviation Advisors LLC, led by Captain John Illson, to conduct an independent root cause analysis of the severe operational disruptions that affected the airline earlier this month. The move follows a recommendation by the Crisis Management Group (CMG) formed by the IndiGo Board after large-scale cancellations began in the first week of December.
According to the airline, Captain Illson brings more than 40 years of aviation experience across major global institutions, including the FAA, ICAO, IATA, and several international carriers. His expertise spans aviation strategy, safety leadership, regulatory standards and emerging aircraft technologies. IndiGo said the review aims to identify the core reasons behind the disruptions and suggest areas where operations can be strengthened.
India’s largest airline faced significant turbulence beginning December 2, when hundreds of flights were cancelled across major airports, leading to widespread inconvenience and long queues for passengers. The situation has also drawn intensified scrutiny from the DGCA and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, both of which are conducting separate examinations into the causes of the disruption.
IndiGo said the independent review will begin immediately, with a detailed report to be presented to the Board after completion. Earlier, the airline had attributed initial disruptions to changes in the Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) order, along with other contributing factors such as minor technical issues, weather challenges and schedule adjustments.
The independent assessment is expected to provide clarity on both operational weaknesses and long-term improvements needed to prevent similar disruptions.
