India’s CEC Gyanesh Kumar Assumes Chairship of International IDEA Council for 2026
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar has taken over as the Chair of the Council of Member States of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) for the year 2026. The ceremony took place in Stockholm on Wednesday, marking a major recognition of India’s global leadership in election management.
The appointment highlights India’s credibility as one of the most trusted and experienced election systems in the world, with decades of democratic practice and institutional strength.
India’s Role in International IDEA
International IDEA is an intergovernmental organisation that works to support and advance democracy worldwide. India is a founding member and has consistently contributed to electoral reforms, training, and capacity building across member nations.
The Election Commission said the new chairship reflects the organisation’s confidence in India’s democratic experience and its long-standing commitment to strengthening global democratic processes.
During the ceremony, Kumar was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to Sweden, Anurag Bhushan, and later met International IDEA Secretary-General Dr Kevin Casas-Zamora to discuss priorities for the coming year.
India’s Scale of Democratic Exercise
Kumar highlighted the vast scale of India’s electoral system. India has more than 900 million registered voters spread across 28 states and eight Union Territories. The 2024 General Election alone saw participation from over 20,000 candidates representing 743 political parties.
More than 20 million personnel, including five million polling staff and one million Booth Level Officers, were involved in conducting elections across the country. Since 1947, India has completed 18 general elections to Parliament and more than 400 state assembly elections, reflecting the continuity of its democratic process.
Priorities for India’s 2026 Chairship
India’s leadership at International IDEA will focus on two major pillars. The first is reimagining democracy for the future, addressing emerging global challenges and strengthening democratic resilience. The second is building independent and professional election management bodies to support sustainable democracies.
India has outlined an “ambitious and action-oriented” vision with the theme: Democracy for an inclusive, peaceful, resilient and sustainable world. Mauritius and Mexico will serve as Vice-Chairs of the Council for 2026.
