Hema Malini’s Mother Wanted Her to Marry Girish Karnad, Not Dharmendra, Reveals Old Report
Hema Malini, fondly known as Bollywood’s "Dream Girl", has always captivated audiences with her beauty and grace. Behind her timeless stardom lies one of the most talked-about love stories in Indian cinema — her relationship and eventual marriage to Dharmendra. While the couple’s bond stood strong for decades, a lesser-known detail resurfaced about her mother’s preference for someone entirely different.
Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s Complicated Love Story
Hema Malini and Dharmendra fell in love while working together in films like Sholay. But their journey to marriage was filled with challenges. Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur and had four children — Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Ajeeta and Vijeeta. This made Hema’s family hesitant, especially her mother Jaya Chakravarthy, who was strongly against her daughter marrying a man with an existing family.
Before Dharmendra came into the picture, actor Jeetendra was once considered a suitable match. Hema was also in a committed relationship with Sanjeev Kumar, and the two reportedly planned to marry before disagreements about her career caused a rift.
Her Mother’s First Choice Was Girish Karnad
According to a feature in Mayapuri’s 250th issue, Hema Malini’s mother had someone else in mind — veteran actor, playwright and filmmaker Girish Karnad. Impressed by his talent, intellect and personality, she reportedly encouraged Hema to collaborate with him in the 1979 film Ratnadeep with hopes that the two would form a deeper bond.
However, destiny had other plans. Despite her mother’s reservations and numerous obstacles, Hema’s connection with Dharmendra only grew stronger.
Marriage Against All Odds
The couple eventually married in 1979, reportedly following Islamic customs, and went on to build a family together. They welcomed two daughters — Esha Deol in 1981 and Ahana Deol in 1985. Over the years, Hema and Dharmendra remained inseparable, standing by each other through personal and professional journeys.
Dharmendra’s passing on November 24 at the age of 89 marked the end of an era, leaving behind a legacy of courage, cinema, and enduring love.
Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s relationship remains one of Bollywood’s most iconic love stories, shaped by emotion, resilience and strong commitment. While her mother initially preferred Girish Karnad, destiny brought Hema and Dharmendra together in a bond that lasted decades. Their story shows how love can rise above societal expectations, family pressures and personal challenges. As the industry and fans mourn Dharmendra’s passing, memories of their journey continue to inspire. The couple’s legacy — both as artists and partners — remains a cherished chapter in Indian cinema’s history.
