Golom Tinku Wins Gold at Khelo India University Games 2025
Rajasthan, Nov 27 — Rising weightlifting star Golom Tinku added another major achievement to his young career by securing the gold medal in the men’s 60kg category at the Khelo India University Games (KIUG) 2025. The 19-year-old lifter from Arunachal Pradesh, representing Lovely Professional University (LPU), topped the field with a remarkable total lift of 256kg — 112kg in Snatch and 144kg in Clean & Jerk.
Golom finished well ahead of his competitors, lifting 33kg more than silver medallist Khumbheswar Mallik of Chandigarh University, who recorded a combined total of 223kg. Sachin from CT University claimed the bronze with a total lift of 214kg.
His latest triumph continues a remarkable rise for Golom, who first emerged as a promising talent during the second Khelo India Youth Games in Pune. But his journey to the podium has been shaped by hardship. In 2016, while still learning the basics of weightlifting, Golom lost his father in a tragic accident at their home in Godak village, Kamle district. The incident deeply impacted the family’s financial situation, forcing his elder brother to give up badminton to support them.
Despite the challenges, Golom remained focused. Inspired by his siblings, he trained at SAI Naharlagun for three years before shifting to the AOC centre in Secunderabad. Speaking to SAI Media after his KIUG 2025 win, he recalled how a coach first encouraged him to try weightlifting while he accompanied his siblings to practice.
Golom’s steady progression soon turned into rapid growth, earning him medals across national and international events. He won bronze at his maiden Khelo India Youth Games in Pune, followed by gold at the Guwahati edition. Internationally, he has earned three medals — one silver and two bronze — at Asian competitions and clinched gold with a 230kg total at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship 2023. He also secured a bronze medal at the IWF World Youth Championship in Durres, Albania in 2023.
Currently training at the Army Sports Institute in Pune, Golom says winning gold at KIUG 2025 was another important milestone as he prepares for the upcoming senior nationals. He credited the Khelo India programme for supporting his training, adding that it has inspired young athletes from remote regions to pursue sports seriously.
