Demi Lovato Opens Up About Marriage Pressure, Personal Growth and Finding Love at the Right Time
Singer-songwriter Demi Lovato is speaking candidly about the societal pressure she once felt to get married, revealing that she believed she was “expected to be married by a certain age.” Now 33 and recently married to musician Jordan ‘Jutes’ Lutes, Demi says her journey to love wasn’t linear — but it happened at exactly the right time.
In an interview with Who What Wear, Lovato admitted that the expectations around marriage weighed on her during her younger years.
“I had expected to be married by a certain age. There’s all this pressure that society puts on you, but it just organically happened. I’m really happy,” she said.
She added that her relationship with her husband continues to deepen every day:
“I told my husband today, ‘I’ve never been more in love with you. I didn’t know my love could grow for you more so than it already has.’ The timing was perfect.”
Before finding stability with Jutes, Lovato had high-profile relationships with Joe Jonas, Wilmer Valderrama, and Max Ehrich. The singer shared that she used to believe some of those relationships were long-term, but she hadn’t yet taken the time to truly work on herself.
“I had been in past relationships where I thought, ‘Oh, this is the long game.’ But I hadn’t taken care of myself yet,” she explained.
According to Demi, self-healing was the turning point:
“The universe rewards you when you do the therapeutic work on yourself… I got myself ready for a life by myself, and then I was able to share it with somebody else.”
Lovato also recently reflected on her decision to be open about her struggles with mental health, eating disorders, and recovery. At 18, she entered rehab for the first time after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and receiving treatment for bulimia. Her public outburst during a Jonas Brothers tour — which she has addressed in documentaries — made her realize she had two choices: hide her struggles or share her truth.
Speaking on the Las Culturistas podcast, Demi said:
“I had a decision that had to be made when I had gone to treatment for the first time.”
She added that she now feels a responsibility to share her experiences so others don’t feel alone.
As she continues to embrace personal growth and stability, Lovato’s reflections highlight how healing, timing, and self-love can transform the path to lasting relationships.
